The family

Mona Bastgen and Armin Vogel run the Bastgen winery in Monzel on the Middle Mosel. It all began in 1993, when they took over the vineyards from Mona’s parents and focused on steep slopes and high-quality manual labor from the very start. In doing so, the two qualified oenologists are continuing the work of generations of winemakers in the Bastgen family.

Mona, one of 8 siblings, had always been deeply connected to the local landscape, and even after a stint in Australian viticulture, it was perfectly clear to her that her life belonged in the vineyards of the Mosel; and that meant being with her husband, Armin, who had also grown up with wine in the Franconian Lower Main region since childhood. After completing his studies and an apprenticeship in viticulture, he decided to follow their shared dream with Mona: To produce authentic natural wines with their own two hands, right here in this magical Mosel valley. Since 2024, their son Paul has also been actively contributing his ideas to this multi-generational project.

This is what our wines stand for

Our goal is to make wines that are authentic: Mosel wines with provenance, shaped by the vintage.

The intensive manual labor in our steep slopes and our organic viticulture would make little sense if we were to manipulate this gift of nature in the cellar. That is why we work as unobtrusively as possible there: without chaptalization, with spontaneous fermentation, and without additives.

Organic viticulture

We are winemakers heart and soul, who go into the vineyard every day. Here, we see our task as the careful tending of the soil and the vines. In the summer, wild and sown herbs grow between the vines of our estate, which also enormously enriches the fauna. The vineyard can be filled with diverse life. Above all, what happens in the soil – a lively transformation of minerals and humus – is ultimately important for the vines in turn. The frequently used term "terroir" finds its fundamental meaning here.

We have been certified organic since 2010.

"We are convinced: only grapes grown as naturally as possible can produce the wines we envision. Only then can the entire vineyard, the terroir, be tasted in the glass."

Come and visit us

You will usually find us in our vineyard clothes, but please don't let our unpolished appearance deter you. We enjoy talking about our work, undogmatically and in great detail. Anyone with questions here will get honest answers.

In the light-flooded "Wein-Bau," our winery's vinotheque with a beautiful view of the Moselle valley, our wines can be tasted. For us, too, the conversations and encounters here with wine enthusiasts from all walks of life are enriching. Wine culture can be experienced in an authentic, unadorned way.
